DOCTRINE is the canon, dogma, or official teachings of AFRICAN ORTHODOX DEREKH that will guide the faith. Doctrine is also the official interpretation of the Holy Mikra that is given to us by the Holy Spirit.
1) INTRODUCTION
African Derekh (Christianity) is a branch of Western Christianity that comprise Roman Catholic, several West European Protestant churches (Lutheran, Anglican, Mennonite, etc) and over 100 American churches that call themselves Pentecostal. DEREKH religion is Jewish and started in Jerusalem in 33 CE after the ascension of Isho (Jesus in Greek).
Isho was born and grew up in Judaic Galilee and, even though the official language of Israel was, and still is, Hebrew, Galilee Jews spoke Aramaic language, not Hebrew. Isho’s mother tongue was Aramaic, and his name was Isho, but Greeks translated it to Greek as Jesus. Hamashiach is Hebrew for Redeemer, and is a title that was conferred to him before he was born. Greeks translated it to Greek as well and called him Kristos. This word is the root of the word CHRISTIANITY.
Hebrew was the official language, and Aramaic was like a vernacular, but gained status because the Son of God was born in Galilee and spoke Aramaic as his mother tongue. Indeed, some original books of the Holy Mikra (Bible), both Old Testament and Final Covenant were written in Aramaic. AFRICAN ORTHODOX DEREKH (AOD) is upholding this fact, and has discarded Greek which dominates Western Christianity to move back to Hebrew and Aramaic. Isho was, and still is, Jewish, as Son of Jacob, David, Judah and Joseph.
DEREKH started in Jerusalem and spread throughout the Mediterranean but was initially controlled from Jerusalem and, as Jewish apostles spread throughout the area, they regularly returned to Jerusalem to consult. At the very beginning DEREKH was preached without written scripture, and apostles were regularly contradicting each other. There was a united world Knesiya (Hebrew for church) but had 5 control centres which were Jerusalem, Antioch, Constantinople, Alexandria, and Rome.
AOD is launched by three small books that combine to state AOD Doctrine in some detail, but we present here a brief summary. The three books are; –
- AFRICAN ORTHODOX DEREKH; Unified and Africanised Christianity, 150 pgs
- D’VAR ELOHIM; Explication of God’s Revealed Word, 110 pgs
- ORDER OF SHABBAT KHENES KADOSH, 42 pgs
2) SHORESH EMUNAH (Roots of Faith)
A: YAHWEH
- There exists the Supreme Spirit, The Sovereign LORD, God, Yahweh
- Who has existed before time and will outlive time
- Yahweh is singular, both in the past, and in the future
- He lives in Great Majesty in Heaven
- To Him alone belongs Dominion, Power, Authority, and Reverence
- He created The World and the Universe
- The World and the Universe had a beginning and will have an end
- God alone shall last forever, and His authority shall have no end
- Every whatever is on earth, the seen and unseen, was created by God
- All the earthly splendour was created by God
- God created everything by His word only
- He is the eternal King of the Kingdom of God, which covers Heaven, Earth, and the Universe.
- God is our Father, and all human beings, from Adam to the present are His children
- Humanity, all animals, birds, land, the sea, rivers, mountains and minerals were created by God.
- By His grace we live, by His facilitation we achieve anything we achieve.
B: RUACH HA-KODESH
- Ruach Ha-Kodesh, The Holy Spirit, is a component of Yahweh
- That has existed before time and will outlive the Universe
- Ruach Ha-Kodesh is a spiritual entity in its own right but is within, and a component of, God
- Ruach-Ha Kodessh is an implementing arm of the Kingdom of Heaven
- He exists to implement the will of the Sovereign LORD and is one with Him.
- After Isho Hamashiach was raised back to heaven, God sent Ruach Ha-Kodesh to all Derekhs to empower and facilitate us.
- Ruach Ha-Kodesh lives with us here on earth, and inside us, from the moment of our tevillar with water to our death; assisting us to communicate with God but also being a witness of our inner intents and overt actions.
- Ruach Ha-Kodesh is the granter of gifts, charismas and earthly abilities for all people on the Way of the LORD.
C: THE HA-MASHIACH
- Long time ago, God created His Key Lieutenant, and gave him His nature but not His Authority
- God remained alone the Supreme Authority of Heaven and the Universe
- The Lieutenant, The Hamashiach, became the righthand man of God in Heaven and was given the exclusive title of Son of God.
- Through the Son, God created everything else that He created, including Angels and Human beings.
- At an appropriate time, and according to His wishes, God dispatched His Son to earth as a pure human being.
- The Son was thus born in Israel by a woman as a male child without an earthly father, and was named ISHO
- As per scripture, in adulthood, ISHO was tevilared, and both empowered and assigned, by the Ruach Ha-Kodesh, to begin his spiritual mission
- As part of this mission, ISHO was Crucified at Golgotha, in Jerusalem, to shed blood, The Blood of the Final Covenant between God, The Father of All, and humankind.
- Through this blood of His Son, ISHO, God Reconciled Himself with humankind
- By this death, ISHO became the HAMASHIACH, or Redeemer of humankind
- He died, was buried, and descended to hell, but on the third day, he was raised to life again by his Father, The Sovereign LORD
- Forty days later, he was raised to Heaven and given an exalted seat at the Right hand of the Throne of God.
- Isho Hamashiach is now the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of God who sits at the Right Hand of the Father, and rules Heaven and Earth with Him.
- He will come again to Earth in glory, to pass judgement on all living and all the dead.
- The delegated authority and majesty of Isho will have an end, however, when everything in Heaven and in the Universe has been placed under his feet.
D: HUMAN BEINGS
- After God had created everything, he finally created humankind in His own likeness and gave them authority over all earth.
- The first couple created by God, Adam and Eve, sinned however, and were cursed by God.
- The elevated spiritual status of humans was immediately withdrawn, and the lifespan of humans was significantly shortened to limit humanity’s sinful digressions on earth
- The Sin of Adam and Eve, however, remained upon the world, and was inherited by all their descendants
- Through later prophets, God promised to send a Redeemer, or the Hamashiach, to redeem humankind and restore it to its initial position.
- At an appointed time, Earth will come to an end, Isho Hamashiach will return to Earth to judge the living and the dead, and all living, and all dead, will be judged as to their Heeding of Scripture during their lifetimes, and good people will rise to the glory of Heaven as bad people descend to the misery of Hell.
E: THE DEVIL AND HELL
- Before He created human beings, The Sovereign LORD, created, through ISHO, a large army of other spiritual beings, with the same nature as ISHO, who reside in heaven and serve God
- At a certain time in the long history of Heaven, a section of this army of angels, staged a vicious rebellion against the Sovereign LORD, by declaring themselves equal to the Sovereign LORD.
- This rebellion was put down by the obedient angels, and the rebellious angels were purged and thrown out of Heaven, to go to Hell.
- As from that moment, they became Evil Spirits, hostile to God’s purpose
- All spirits, big and small, never die and live forever, so these evil spirits are still there in Hell waiting for their final judgement and punishment from God which will be given at an appointed time.
- These evil spirits roam earth and hate human beings, and they assigned themselves the task of hurting human beings with disease, droughts, accidents, and wars. They also seduce human beings into unbelief, rebellion, apostacy, stupid desires, egotism, and wider sin so that humans become alienated from their Holy Father, God, Origin and Destiny.
3) DEREKH CREED
- Derekh is the Way of the Sovereign LORD, and to be a Derekh is to walk on this narrow but PAVED PATH that God set out for us from the very beginning
- Staying on the Way of the LORD has immeasurable spiritual and worldly rewards from our Father, Yahweh, just as digression from it has limitless admonitions and suffering here on earth and in the life hereafter.
- The starting point to Walk on the Way of the LORD is to attain genuine and lasting Emunah in the Sovereign Lord, and in His only Son, Isho
- Emunah is much more than certitude and is more precisely, a personal WAR to WALK ON THE WAY of the LORD, against considerable temptation and adversity, from early youth to very old age.
- The purpose of Derekh and Emunah is however to facilitate life on Earth, long before death, by getting protection from evil spirits, witchcraft, and hostile forces, as well as blessings for a disease free, richly provided, and accomplishing long life.
- Love God, your LORD, with all your intellect, all your strength, and all your heart.
- Love your Neighbour as you love yourself.
- Love means heed God’s commands, reconcile with, respect, treat with dignity, facilitate, and easily live with your neighbour
- Our neighbour as Africans is ALL other Africans without regard to tribe, height, disability, economic position, or religion
- DEREKH Emunah is all about HEEDING GOD, REVERING The HA-MASHIACH, and DESISTING from SIN.
4) SINGULAR GODSHIP
AFRICAN ORTHODOX DEREKH is standing on specific Revelation of the Spirit but has also adopted the canon of DEREKH Jerusalem of 33 to 150 CE. It has, accordingly, rejected a series of amendments and changes introduced by Greeks, Romans, Europeans, and Americans, some of which ate outrageous.
We believe in ONE GOD only, and we reject the concept of the Holy Trinity as sacrilege. God is singular, and is alone the King of the Kingdom of Heaven. He has attributes and capabilities that are not shared by any other heavenly entity.
Isho Ha-mashiach is a very senior heavenly authority, and is a god, but he is not God. The world has ONE God and a multitude of gods. This is why scripture (Isa 9:6) says Isho is a ‘mighty god’, meaning that he is stronger than all the other gods. Several gods are named by the Holy Mikra itself, including Baal Zebub (2 Kgs 1:1-6). Isho Ha-mashiach is a creature of God and is the beginning of creation. He does not share God-ness with God. His title as Son of God, was granted as a favour by God, The Sovereign LORD. Isho was given authority over Heaven and Earth in the same manner that Joseph, son of Jacob, a Hebrew, was given all executive power in Egypt by the Pharaoh (Gen 41:37-41). Pharaoh remained the only King of Egypt, but his authority was exercised by Joseph. We therefore reject both Western Diphysitism (two natures of Isho) and Eastern Monophysitism (the one nature of Isho).
We must note also that human beings were initially created as small gods, with inherent spiritual power (Gen 1:26), (Ps 82:6-7). This status was destroyed by Adam and Eve sin at Eden, but was restored by Isho at Golgotha, and we can all be small gods as well by divinisation. As Derekhs we are small gods (Jn 10:34-36). Isho is thus a big god but is not God. As gods, human beings report directly to God, the Father, through his chief servant, Isho Ha-mashiach.
Equally, the Holy Spirit is not God; He is just an implementing authority for God’s decisions. He has discretion just as Isho has but has delegated power. Both Isho and Ruach Ha-Kodesh are subordinate to God the Father, and cannot be bundled with Him in the manner framed by Western Christianity in the so-called Holy Trinity. African Derekhs don’t have to bother themselves with these academic aspects that were invented by Greeks because DEREKH religion stands on faith, not on academic understanding. Our only duty is Emonah (faith) or foolish and total acceptance of God and His Son.
Further, God is masculine, and is not gender neutral. He is called FATHER, LORD. All gods of light and all angels in heaven are also masculine.
5) STATUS OF MARYAM
Maryam (Hebrew for Mary) is human mother of Isho. She is a saint like all the others, but she is not special in any way. She is accordingly not part of Derekh worship protocol. AFRICAN DEREKH rejects resolutions of Ephesus Ecumenical Council of 431CE which categorised Mayam as ‘mother of God’ or ‘Theotokos’, and agree entirely with Archbishop Nestorius of Constantinople that Maryam is ‘Christokos’ or mother of Isho, a human being. It is outrageous and sacrilege to say Maryam, a pure earthly human being, is a mother of God.
6) HOLY MIKRA
Holy Mikra (Bible in Greek) has two collections put together, Old Testament and Final Covenant. The Greek Bible has 66 books (39+27) because the Greek Old Testament has 39 books. The Jewish Old Testament, called Tanakh, has only 24 Books. The Old Testament belongs to Jews, and Greeks had no authority to reconfigure it into 39 books. AFRICAN DEREKH Mikra has therefore (24 +1+27) = 52 Books in total. The book of Enoch (from the Ethiopian Mikra) is added to the AFRICAN DEREKH Mikra as Deuterocanonical (semi-official).
7) GREEK THEOLOGY
AFRICAN DEREKH rejects academisation of religion that was introduced into Derekh faith by Greeks in 200 to 400 CE. Greek theology was developed by great Greek philosophers like Socrates and Aristotle in 300 to 100 BC to address Greek gods and goddesses (Theos) which had no written scripture. It is outrageous to bring such lowly knowledge to explicate a very sophisticated and totally revealed religion like Jewish DEREKH. Western Christianity adopted Greek Derekh to this day and ia follower of Greek theology.
8) PASTORAL RANKS
AFRICAN DEREKH has rejected episcopal governance of bishops and patriarchs, and has instead opted for Elders Councils governance, primarily to acknowledge African spiritual-social reality. As such we have no human Pastors, Bishops, or Popes. We believe in one Shepherd and Chief Priest, Isho Hamashiach, who ministers us at all AFRICAN DEREKH Synagogues, wherever we are in Africa and beyond. All priests will be known as SHAMASHIM (Deacons / Servants). Shamashim will differ in internal seniority, but their titles will be the same. AOD will thus have a very flat organisation structure.
Only men of 30 years or older can be Shamashim. Lay men and boys can assist Shamashim at the Bimah (altar) whenever there is need. It is sacrilege to bring women at the altar of the God of Abraham, Isack, and Israel.
9) THE KNESIYA
Western Christianity uses the word church to refer to both the building of Sunday worship as well as the institution. AFRICAN DEREKH will differ. Houses of Worship will be known as Synagogues, just as they were known in Israel at the time of Isho. They will also be called Beit Knesset. The Institution of AFRICAN DEREKH will be known as KNESIYA (Hebrew for Church)
10) KNESIYA GOVERNANCE
- African Derekh KNESIYA will be governed by Committees and Councils of Male Elders (51 to 75 years) elected by Congregations of men and women of 21 years or older to serve 3-year terms.
- Lay Male Elders Councils and Committees will alone manage AFRICAN DEREKH finances so that Shamashim can serve God. We cannot serve both God and money (Mt 6:24).
- We reject Western Christianity of turning DEREKH religion into a business whereby there are private churches whose primary motive is to earn income. Sub Saharan Africa had over 30,000 private churches in 2024, and we demand that they be closed immediately.
11) SYNAGOGUES
- Houses of worship will be known as Synagogues or Beit Knesset.
- The Synagogues will be without chairs or pews, and all shall sit down on the floor.
- There shall be a strict separation of men and boys from women and girls. There will therefore be a male section on the right side and there shall be a female section on the left of the synagogue with a Matchizar (curtain) between the two sections.
- The Synagogue service is not a community meeting, rather it is a venue for submitting to, and worshipping, God. It is a venue for maximum humility, and we shall accordingly sit on the floor and kneel to pray.
- All shall enter the Synagogue compound without shoes or sandals. God calls Moshe while he was looking after sheep and goats in the bush in Median and tells him ‘Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, because you are standing on holy ground. (Exo 3:5). The bush became holy ground because of God’s presence and, the synagogue is holy ground because of God’s presence as well.
- Women and girls must wear loose-fitting dresses, with narrow round necks, that extend to their leg ankles. They must also wear head scarfs that cover both head and neck to enter the Synagogue compound. Head scarfs for women were required by all Christian denominations for over 1,000 years and were dropped by the Western churches in the last 300 years but are still demanded by some churches even in USA.
- Boys 6 to 14 years of age can wear shorts or short sleeves to come to the Beit Knesset but any male older than 14 years must wear a full trouser and a loose-fitting plain or vertically stripped long sleeve shirt
- Children below 6 years cannot be brought to the Beit Knesset Holy Gathering.
12) ANNUAL FAST
There shall be a compulsory 40-day annual fast ending on Good Friday. All DEREKHS shall strive to observe this fast designed to help as atone, and plead more powerfully for God’s mercy and grace in our lives. The Annual Fast shall be accompanied by 14-hour daytime fast, piousness, self-reprimand, charity, and spiritual retooling with 5 rounds of tefillah per day.
13) TEFILLAH
Tefillah (Hebrew for prayer) is spiritual communication from humans to God or the Hamashiach for one or more of the following purposes; –
- Exaltation of God
- Gratitude to God
- Submission to God
- Devotion, Cultivating long term relationship with God
- Confession, Atonement of our sins
- Petitioning for facilitation or help from God in the name of Isho
Tefillah stands on Emonah because, without Emonah we will mostly be talking to ourselves rather than to God or the Hamashiach, even if we supplicate. The character of God revealed repeatedly by the Holy Mikra is that God regularly holds back on His good people to test their Emonah. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moshe, Job, David, Apostle Paul and even Isho Hamashiach himself were all trusted servants of God in their times but were repeatedly made to suffer greatly to demonstrate their Emonah to God by being steadfast and loyal. The message then is Do Not Get Discouraged by God’s silence on your Tefillah. Trust God in all situations, and stick with him, WITHOUT DOUBT or COMPLAINTS. Simply walk in his Paved Path.
14) HEALING AND DELIVERANCE
DEREKH religion, from the garden of Eden to Mt Sinai, to Mt. Zion, to Golgotha; from Adam to Senior Prophet Moshe, to The Ha-mashiach or ‘The second Adam (1 Cor 15:45-49)”, has never been just about heaven. From the Torah to the Gospel, Derekh has always been, and will always be, foremost, about God’s unprecedented love to humanity, and his desire and willingness, therefore, to offer protection, facilitation and salvation to compliant mankind in this worldly life. This is God’s original grand plan that He has never revised. He remains faithful, steadfast and eager to meet his side of the covenant (Lam 3:31-33) if only humankind can meet its side as well.
Derekh religion is standing on the power of Ruach Ha-Kodesh (Holy Spirit) because Isho told his disciples on Mt Zion in Jerusalem that they must not leave Jerusalem until they receive the Spirit of God (Acts 1:4). Adding that when the Spirit comes upon them, they will be filled with power and they will be witnesses for him in Jerusalem, all Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the Earth (Acts 1:8).
Spirit power, Healing, Deliverance and Miracles are therefore critical components of AFRICAN DEREKH religion and worship practice. DEREKH religion cannot exist anywhere without the power of God through the Spirit and name of Isho Ha-Mashiach. Healing and Deliverance shall therefore define AFRICAN DEREKH in every Synagogue
15) DEREKH SHIR
Derekh Shir (Hebrew) means DEREKH religious songs that are played in Beit Knesset as well as in other religious gatherings and inside homes. Derekh Shir is counted to be part of Tefillah but shall be accompanied by African traditional music instruments. European music instruments are therefore prohibited. Every Derekh service, other than private Tefillah sessions, shall be accompanied by Shir (song). Shir shall address God or the Hamashiach in praise or gratitude.
DEREKH Shir shall differ with Western Gospel music by being highly focused, spiritual and religious. AFRICAN DEREKH Shir shall be a joint tefillah by the congregation, or by a choir, and all singers and instrument players must meet the dress code for entering a Synagogue that is contained herein. Derekh shir can never be sold or traded. Western gospel music is casual, worldly and commercial and this is desecration of Derekh religion. Gospel music is addressing human beings and human sentiment, but AFRICAN DEREKH Shir must crisply address God and must therefore be defined by maximum humility and veneration, with all singers facing the bimah and inwardly venerating and cerebrating the Sovereign LORD.
16) DEREKH SYMBOLS
When DEREKH started in Jerusalem in 33 CE, it had no symbols and, symbols were created much later by Gentiles outside of Israel. Since DEREKH was in different countries, each country developed its own symbol. The Cross was adopted around 200 CE and was later accepted by most Derekh denominations outside Israel.
AFRICAN ORTHODOX DEREKH has created its own brand of cross which is essentially a SPEAR. The spear is a much more powerful religious symbol for Derekh faith than the Cross. In scriptural terms, a spear represents the Power and Majesty of God (Hab 3:11), Righteous War (Jos 8:18), (Jn 18:10-11), (Judg 3:2), (Judg 3:16), God’s will (Jn 19:34); Salvation (Jn 20:27), (Zech 12:10), (Rev 1:7), Judgement, and Destiny, the WORD of God (Heb 4:12), (Efe 6:17). The Spear is also a symbol of war, and Derekh will always be a War about Emonah and Discipleship of Ha-mashiach; the war to remain on the Paved Path, which is the Way of the LORD.
17) RELIGIOUS GREETINGS
DEREKH greetings will be in Hebrew but can be stated in local languages as well, as follows;-
KAVOD LELOHIM; LEHOL LAHM
HALLEL HAMASHIACH: AMEN
SHALOM ALEKHEM: ALEKHEM SHALOM
18) THANKING GOD
As Derekhs, we have no greater duty than that of praising God, and thanking God, for our life and achievements, however miniscule they are. We should build this religious culture of purposely and genuinely thanking God quietly or verbally every day of our lives. In thanking God, we should desist from uttering words that we don’t genuinely feel internally; we must speak truthfully to God, knowing He reads our consciousness and our minds.
DEREKHS shall therefore thank God and acknowledge God’s help, and facilitation, in their lives at every activity or issue so that this is something they repeat 10 to 20 times in a single day. Start any work, function or activity by thanking God for enabling you to start that work or activity. You invite God’s blessings by thanking Him.
- BARUKH HASHEM (Blessed is His name), which is to say, ‘Thanks God’.
- IM YIRTZEH HASHEM (God Willing), I will do this and that.
- B EZRAT HASHEM (By the grace of God), I have done this and that
Many African Derekhs do not realise that Western Christianity in which they were born and brought up is adulterated. They believe the white man more than they believe God. When you bring to them original DEREKH JERUSALEM, they think this is a new religion, but it isn’t. This is genuine DEREKH that arise out of Revelation of the Ruach Ha-Kodesh (Holy Spirit). These thanks and acknowledgements are written in scripture. (1 Chr 16:34), (2 Cor 9:15), (The 5:16-18), (Lk 12:19-21), (Jas 3:14-16), (Pro 27:1), (Deut 28:45).
19) OFFERING
All offering to AFRICAN DEREKH Knesiya shall be voluntary according to how a person is financially able to offer himself to God. Money is not however, the only offering we shall offer to God because scripture says devotion and holiness are bigger offerings to God than money. (Heb 13:15-16), (Hos 6:6), (Prv 21:3), (Isa 1:10-12). Scripture also says we have received for free, and we must serve without being paid (Mt 10:8). AFRICAN DEREKH will therefore de-emphasise offering by removing it from Shabbat Gathering Liturgy. We are reminded however to always thankfully donate to the poor because all donations to the poor are offerings to God Himself. We must offer all offering in elevated humility and thankfulness to God, the Provider.
20) MARRIAGE
Marriage is a strict duty and will be both enforced and facilitated by AFRICAN DEREKH Knesiya. The Holy Mikra does not prohibit polygyny or limit marriage to any number of wives, and polygyny will accordingly be allowed by AFRICAN ORTHODOX DEREKH, but local civil law will be observed. Principles of fairness and equity will however be introduced to preclude or prohibit some polygynous marriages. Divorce and separation are strictly prohibited by scripture, and will not be tolerated. Marriage is a lifetime bond, for better or for worse. Cohabitation and unregistered marriage shall be adultery.
